Original Tesla Model Y which was launched seven year ago (March 2019) was a big hit and top seller but to be honest that optional third row felt like a penalty for the adults, it was very uncomfortably small. But for 2027, Tesla has finally fixed this issue with the Model Y L. What Does the “L” Stand in 2027 Tesla Model Y L?
“L” in the 2027 Tesla Model Y L stans for the “Longer.” Tesla has increased it’s side by 18 cm (7 inches) and increased roof height by a little over 4 cm. I know, you might be wondering that this is not a massive change but let me tell you i felt inside more space and much more change.
Instead of previous seats which was very uncomfortable you will get premium Launch Series (standard with six seats). these seats have features like plush, heated, and ventilated captain’s chairs in the middle. I am impressed with the third row space, here you will get 78 cm (31 inches) of legroom. and if your second row passenger slide it’s second row a bit then two adults will easily sits in the third row for a longer road trip without any discomfort.
Power & Range
You would think that this three row SUV will feel a bit sluggish, but let me tell you this one is absolute power, you will feel flying like power performance with it. The 2027 Tesla Model Y L offers a dual-motor and all-wheel-drive setup giving you almost 500 horsepower. There is new battery too of 83 kWh capacity, it’s numbers are pretty wild:
- 0-100 km/h: Officially 4.5 seconds, but real-world tests are hitting closer to 4.2.
- Range: Up to 534 km (332 miles) on a single charge.
- Charging: 15 minutes at a Supercharger gets you about 275 km of range back.
Weight to power ratio is must to check if you want to know about the power. it weighs 2,085 kg which is only 90 kg heavier than the standard Y. but it feels very light on the cornering because of adaptive suspension and staggered 20-inch rear tires.
Competitor Analysis
Currently there are plenty of three-row EV available in the market, let’s compare them one by one to check how do they offer against 2027 Tesla Model Y L.
- Kia EV9 & Hyundai Ioniq 9: Proper Boxy styled SUV from Japanese automakers offers little extra space because of it’s boxy shape. But i feel they are little heavy (over 2,500 kg) that’s why they are lttle sluggish and doesent feel that sharper as of Tesla Model Y L. plus Model Y L is little quicker to reach 100 km/h.
- Rivian R1S: This one offer more storage compared to the model y along with it’s off-roading capacity but it is significantly higher priced. this one is better if you are looking for a off roader. but if you are mainly going to use it on road drive then the Tesla Model Y L which has lower ground clearance of (about 16.7 cm of clearance).
- BYD Seal / Atto 3: BYD is rising electric giant globally, they do have advantage in the battery teck but right now they don’t have any direct three-row crossover yet. Tesla, also countering them with their software and the Supercharger network.
Useful Tech in the 2027 Tesla Model Y L
Tesla is offering tech that is lightyears ahead and actually makes daily driving very convenient and easier. First thing that catches your eyes is the 16-inch center screen which i feel extremely smooth and no lag at all. Yes, still there are no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto but the native OS is so good that you will never miss any of them.
Tesla is now offering in built Grok AI assistant, you can put it into the therapist mode and tell your stories and it will analyze and give honest replies to help you out. it can tell your kids stories when you are in traffic or bored alone.
You also get Full Self-Driving (FSD) and best part is you get 12 months free with launch series. It is accurate to drive on the city roads, highway can detect the oncoming cars and even it can pull out of the driveway for the rest if you want. Even with all of this tech you have to keep looking at what is going on but it genuinely helpful in daily and longer drives.
My Final Thoughts
It’s starting price is about $61,990 and i feel it is absolute value for money. You get free 12 months of FSD, really good third row space, sportier acceleration and support of Tesla. If you are looking for a MPV and a modern family SUV without any compromise in the power and performance then you should absolutely check this one out.
