We all know BMW model names can be confusing sometime and most of you might feel like any secret code. If you are looking to know what does is stand in the 318is or 325is then this is the right place to get detailed look into it.
In BMW’ naming language “IS” stands for Injection Sport. Let me break down what does that mean.

The “i” is for Injection
Back in the time when car mainly used to have carburetors for mixing fuel and air. Then BMW came up withe first electronic fuel injection, it was a big deal back in time and they wanted to highlight this. Especially because it improved starting process to very smooth. so, basically this “i” was added to flex it’s Injection system. Now, almost every car has this injection system but BMW still kept this badging purely out of tradition.
The “s” is for Sport
If you see a BMW with “s” badging in the end, it means the the car is specifically tuned for the sportier performance and for more sharper handling. Although, this is not a hardcore track ready “M” car like the M3 but it will be significantly better than the base model. If you see any “is” badging then know that it will have factory tuned stiffer suspension, sportier seats and sometimes a better gearbox or a limited-slip differential to help keep power in the control.
The Sweet Spot
Basically, the “is” badged cars like 90s E30 318is are considered as the mid entry into BMW. They are light and can be powerful performer but there best part is cruising through tight corners on a weekend drive up into the ghats.
The Modern BMWs have different badging like “M Sport” packages or “sDrive” but let me tell you that the classic “is” badging cars have lot of respect in the community.
That’s all we have about the “is” hope you have understood the BMWs concept. so next time any BMW with “is” passes by you just admire tradition and purpose behind it. thank you for the reading and do not forget to check out our other interesting stories on automobiles.
